Man praising cropped

Prayers for Holy Week (from websites with liturgies, litanies and prayers on the Christian year. www.faithandworship.com  the website for the Iona Community in Scotland is a great resource, with most prayers written by John Birch)

Today we pause to remember your sacrificial love
That shone light into the darkness
That bore life from such emptiness
That revealed hope out of devastation
That spoke truth through incrimination
That released freedom in spite of imprisonment
And brought us forgiveness instead of punishment.
Thank you that we can now walk in the light of your
Life, Hope, truth, freedom and forgiveness
This day and every day. Amen
The veil of darkness
Transformed to the brightness of light
The most dreadful end
Became the most beautiful beginning.
The depths of despair
Fade to reveal hope everlasting,
The curse of death
Defeated by eternal life.
Thank you, Lord, for the wonder of Easter

Sovereign Lord,
your hand has touched
the dry bones of our faith,
your Word has breathed new life where there was death,
your spirit raised us up from where we lay,
your love has brought us home and to your cross,
and by your grace  we stand forgiven,  free.

Remind us often Lord,
When we are feeling
beyond reproach,
pleased with ourselves,
self-sufficient in our ways
That for such as us
and better
And worse
You walked a road that took you to a cruel cross, and rose again
to show us where we might look for rescue
as from this lofty perch we fall.

Inscribed upon our heart,
the maker’s mark,
the Word of God,
Beautifully written,
that all God’s people might know
that we are precious,
children of a heavenly Father,
becoming family together.
